Social Networking is one of the fastest growing and most notable of the Web 2.0 applications. Social networking sites focus on bringing together people and organizations with similar interests or activities. In general, these sites offer a wide range of tools that facilitate visits, messaging, and sharing. There are hundreds of social networking sites. The three most popular are Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn.
• Facebook was originally started by a Harvard University student in 2004 for college students. By 2008, it had become the most used social networking site. It now has over one billion users worldwide. There are many types of features and applications available on Facebook. Such as instant messaging, photo and video sharing, and more. There are three basic categories of Facebook users: individuals, businesses and communities. Individuals create Facebook profiles, which may include photos, their interests, contact information and other private information. These profiles are usually available for those looking for friends, family and old friends, lost relatives, etc., and for people with similar interests. Facebook profiles are easy to create and update.
A Facebook page is created to promote the products and services of the business. People in the public sector, such as politicians and actors, also create Facebook pages to stay in touch with their constituencies and fans. The Facebook page has now become the standard way for self-promotion of promoters, musicians and other celebrities. Groups of people with similar interests often form Facebook groups. Through these groups, members come together to share information and discuss topics of interest. Groups are usually based on a topic, event, or concept. Clubs and political organizations make extensive use of Facebook pages to coordinate their activities and share information.
Google +, also known as Google Plus, was launched in 2011. Hey Google Inc. is a mix of some existing services and some new ones. These new services include circles that bring together people with similar interests and hangouts to communicate with up to 10 people at once. Facebook and Google+ offer similar services. Of the two, Facebook has come first and has the highest number of users. But Google+ offers integration with other Google services, such as Google Docs, Chat and Calendar.
LinkedIn was launched in 2003 and has become one of the leading business-based social networking sites. While it's not as big as Facebook or Google+, it's still the largest social network for business professionals. It has more than 100 million users. The tools available on LinkedIn provide business contacts, build a wide business network, get information about each business, find a job and more. There are many social networking sites and each has different features and interactions.
